Euro 2020: Borna Barisic and Nikola Katic backed for Croatia Euro Cup squad

Zlatko Dalic has urged Old Firm heroes Borna Barisic and Niko Katic to become Glasgow giants for his Croatia side this summer by helping them on the road to Euro 2020 glory in their adopted home city. The Croatian national team boss led his nation to the 2018 World Cup final where they lost to France and is looking to go one better in the Euros. And as Dalic outlined his 2020 vision in an exclusive interview with Record Sport, he insists Ibrox pair Barisic and Katic could have a huge part to play in his ambition.

Barisic is currently a nailed-on starter for Dalic who has challenged Katic to follow him into the full squad and add to the one senior cap he won in May 2017.

The Croatia boss admitted Katic would have made his squad for the final Euro 2020 qualifier against Slovakia due to injuries but his lack of game time at Rangers cost him.

But Katic won his place back in Steven Gerrard’s side after an injury to Filip Hollander and savored the sweetest moment of his Gers career when he headed home the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Celtic at Parkhead.

Barisic, who is settled in Glasgow despite Roma showing an interest, picked up the man of the match award and Dalic is planning a scouting mission to Scotland early this year and might take in the next Old Firm clash at Ibrox in March.

Croatia is in Group D along with England and the Czech Republic and Scotland - if they can get through the play-offs - will join them.

Two of their games will be at Hampden and Dalic said: “It would be so special for Borna and Niko to play for Croatia in Glasgow and that has to be their target.

“I watched them in the Old Firm game and was so pleased for both of them. It was a victory for Rangers but I can tell you we also celebrated in Croatia. I would love the Glasgow public to come out and support Croatia and hopefully, Borna and Niko can help us get some vital results if they play their part. Of course, Scotland could also be in our group and that would be incredible. But, regardless, it would be great for them to play for Croatia in Glasgow which has been their home for the last couple of years.”

“Borna Barisic is now the number one left-back in my team and I have watched Niko closely. I considered him for the last game but he wasn’t in the Rangers side but I hope he can maintain his level and he’s in my thoughts for the next game.”
