Liverpool already has a world-famous
football catchphrase. You see it on banners hanging from the lampposts on the
streets approaching Anfield, on Liverpool’s social media accounts.
“This Means More” it was so-called,
three words that have come to be Liverpool FC’s newish slogan. Football supporters from around the
world can buy Premier League Tickets online to enjoy its wonderful
actions.
It’s not enough winning European
Cups or having a great team who play wonderful football, one where local lads
join with well-recruited international stars, one managed by a hugely popular
Herrmann says it in Scouse, because this means more.
Real Madrid can win 13
European Cups but it’s not quite as special as Liverpool’s six because there’s
actually mean more. It’s a deeper understanding that only members of
Liverpool’s huge global tribe can fully grow.
They are superior, their feelings
deeper and stronger than football fans of every other club. No matter how much
you feel for your club, it’s never quite as much as Liverpool fans feel for
theirs.
Except for its supercilious
marketing bollocks that has been printed on a vast fan base as if everything
Liverpool do somehow has a deeper meaning than the achievements of every other
football club.
Liverpool, you are better than
this. You’re the European champions and top of the Premier League. You have
a great team and manager. Your club has a magnificent history. Rush, Hansen,
and Sourness not only scarred my childhood, but they were world-class players.
You went to Rome to play Roma in
the final of the European Cup and, in a stadium full of Romans, you beat them
on penalties. You sing a song about Firmino which works its way into the brain
of anyone who hears it.
Fans Reply to Liverpool FC’s motto
“This means more” is marketing
speak. You don’t need this. You’re Liverpool, not Manchester City. You
don’t need to try that hard. You’ll be putting bits of plastic on seats next to
be waved on one of those famous European nights at Anfield when the Kop actually
sucks the ball into the net as it did with John O’Shea’s header.
Your fans did what no other set of
fans did at Old Trafford this season and remained quiet for almost 90 minutes.
It’s extremely hard to get 3,000 people to watch a game of football in near
silence, but you did it. You nearly won the league in 2009 and 2014.
You’re from a fine, world-renowned
city that punches well above its demographic, has a world heritage status and a
tower that used to have a thing that spun around at the top before it broke.
You have two cathedrals and St George’s Hall, the finest building in England.
I’m being silly the Kop before the
2016 Europa League game against Manchester United. Liverpool already
has a motto that is known the world over “You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
I know Liverpool fans who wince at
such behavior. One messaged me after that tweet to say, “The thing is, I know
the lad who wrote it and he probably believes it.” Imagine what they’ll be like
if they win the league.
I’m from Manchester. I’m
conditioned not to like Liverpool FC and that’s fine. I hope they lose every
game they play and I’d expect nothing less than any Liverpool fan in reverse.
