FA Cup Overview

The 2011–12 FA Cup (also known as the 2011–12 FA Cup with Budweiser) is the 131st season of the world's oldest association football knock-out competition. The closing date for applications was 1 April 2011, and saw 825 clubs apply to enter. On 8 July 2011, the FA announced that 763 clubs had been accepted. The winners will qualify for the (2012–13) UEFA Europa League and will start the competition in the group stage without having to play a playoff game. All of the teams that entered the competition and were not members of the Premier League or the Football League had to compete in the qualifying rounds. Teams from Leagues One and Two entered at this stage, along with the winners from the Fourth Round Qualifying. The draw was made on 30 October 2011 and ties were played on the weekend of 12–13 November 2011. The competition was overshadowed by the collapse of Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba during their Sixth Round match with Tottenham Hotspur. Muamba went into cardiac arrest on the pitch and, following failed attempts to resuscitate him, was taken to the London Chest Hospital; where he went on to recover. The match was subsequently abandoned. On March 27, the match was replayed and Tottenham won 3-1.

FA Cup Final Tickets

The Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup, is a knockout cup competition in English football, run by and named after The Football Association. The name “FA Cup” refers to the English men’s tournament.

The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world, commencing in 1871-72. Because it involves clubs of all standards playing against each other there is the possibility for “minnows” from the lower divisions to become “giant-killers” by eliminating top clubs from the tournament, although lower division teams rarely reach the final. A record 762 teams have been accepted into the cup for 2008-2009, beating the previous record of 731 teams accepted into the FA Cup in 2007-08. In comparison, the League Cup can involve only the 72 members of The Football League (which organises that competition) and the 20 teams in the Premier League for a total of 92 eligible teams.

The holders of the FA Cup are Portsmouth, who beat Cardiff City 1-0 in the 2008 final on 17 May 2008. This is the first time that a team from outside the ‘top four’ (Manchester United, Liverpool , Chelsea, and Arsenal) has won the FA Cup in 13 years.
