Newcastle United have succeeded in signing England midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City. Shelvey has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal at St. James' Park. He is capped six times by England football team. 23 year old Shelvey has appeared in 126 matches of world famous club football competition Premier League for Swansea and his previous club Liverpool. He has scored 12 goals in the Premiership so far.
Jonjo Shelvey started his professional career by making his debut for Charlton in 2008 at just 16. He moved to Liverpool in May 2010 to remain in and out of the team under a succession of different managers. He left Anfield for a £5m deal in July 2013 to move to Swansea. He will get about £500,000 of that amount because of a sell-on clause. He helped the Swans in reaching their highest Premier League position of eighth in the 2014-15 season. But his performances in current season have been disappointing for Swansea fans. Transfer fee is stated to be around £12m for his latest move to NUFC. It is second January signing of Newcastle after the arrival of Senegal midfielder Henri Saivet from Bordeaux.
Jonjo Shelvey expressed pleasure on joing Magpies by saying:
NUFC head coach Steve McClaren welcomed the transfer by stating:"I'm very excited to be here. I'm so glad that it's finally done. I drove up through the night to be here so it's been a manic 24 hours but it's all been worth it to come here and play for this great club."
"I'm delighted to welcome Jonjo to Newcastle United. He has great experience for a young English central midfielder and is a current England international, so I'm certain he will be a great addition to the squad. He is a player we have admired for some time and we're very pleased that we've now been able to bring him here."
McClaren is looking to bring players to Newcastle who know the Premier League well. Addressing the lack of goals should be main focus for Geordies. They are interested in the Tottenham and England winger Andros Townsend. They are on the watch-out for their former striker Andy Carroll, who is now at West Ham United. Newcastle are also in contact with Saido Berahino of West Bromwich Albion and Wolfsburg's Bas Dost.
